When Is Just Getting an Education More Practical Than a Specialized Degree?

I grew up in a world where young people were urged to stay in school and get an education. It didn’t matter what in, just get an education. At that time about 10% of high school students went on to get a college degree, less in non-urban areas. That all changed in the 60’s and 70’s at a time when university enrollment was skyrocketing. The big shift was in terms of specialization. Students were urged to decide on a career and work towards getting the necessary training and credentials needed to pursue that career. The pressure on young people to “be practical” and decide on a career early still exists today. If a 19-year-old announces, “I want to be a lawyer (or nurse, or teacher, or electrician)”, he or she is met with approving smiles from teachers and parents. If the same 19-year-old were to say simply “I just want to get an education”, his or her seniors would stare with puzzled expressions or make pronouncements about being practical. The problem is that specialized education doesn’t work as well as it did in the 70’s when they were in school. The recent figures are showing that most young people by the time they reach 39 will have had at least three different jobs and made one major career change. So much for the specialized career! The dream of the single career doesn’t fit with the changing economies in the Western world. In his book, A Whole New Mind, Daniel Pink estimated a few years ago that 60% of North American jobs as we have known them will move offshore. Anything that can be routinized will go offshore. It’s already easy to find an English-speaking MBA for $9/hr or a programmer for $5/hr.So what if a young person were to go to college simply to get an education and a degree, the degree being the basic entrance credential for most non-routine jobs? He or she could study fine arts, history, sociology, literature, or whatever else was of interest. And what if they waited on a career decision well beyond graduation? The Harvard MBA was the gold standard degree in the business world for several decades. They still only accept one applicant in 100. But the Stanford MFA (Master of Fine Arts), according to Daniel Pink, is the new gold standard. They accept one applicant in 1000. In the modern economy, our edge over the emerging economies comes from creativity, design, and perspective. Design it here, but build it there. Where was the windshield for your new car made? Probably China. The young people best equipped to contribute to the modern economy will be broadly educated. This applies even in the professions. As far back as 35 years ago, McMaster University medical school preferred sociology or history graduates over science graduates. They wanted applicants with “humanity” and “ability to think”; stating, “We can teach them the science.”Once again the broad general education has risen to the top in long-term practicality. Some of our youth already get this. We collectively need to lighten up. They need inspiration more than pressure.

Alstons Furniture – A Brief History

The Alston family has been involved with furniture for over two centuries. As far back as 1776 there were Alstons repairing furniture in their Chelsea workshop. The present family’s direct ancestors started the business that became the Alstons Furniture business we know today in Sudbury, Suffolk. William Alston (1839-1919) and his brother Ambrose (1834 – 1902) were both master cabinet makers during the middle of the 19th century. William Alston later became a furniture dealer as well, selling from premises in 95 North Street, Sudbury. The Alstons Furniture business prospered and moved to 9 Old Market Place, Sudbury in 1875 Both of William Alston’s sons, Hammond and Percy worked in the business and together they then created one of the first all electric workshops. The premises at Old Market Place became a retail furniture shop as well, with additional workshops. One of which was to eventually form the beginnings of the Alstons Furniture Upholstery operation much later on. In 1921 Percy Alston’s son Leslie started an apprenticeship with his father and then completed this at Fisher Trade Woodworking in London’s East End.In 1937 Leslie started his own manufacturing business at a redundant coconut matting factory in Long Melford. The business was set up with a £6,000 bank loan. Leslie’s brother Roy joined him there to help run the new venture. The company later adopted the trade mark Albro as an abbreviation of Alston brothers, this continued into the 1980’s.During the Second World War, the factory in Long Melford switched its production to ‘utility’ bedroom and dining furniture. Extra work was also taken on to manufacture coffins for the war effort.Later in the war, the Long Melford factory was burnt out and new premises were sought in Ipswich. Initially production was resumed within Wrinch’s factory in Nacton Road, Ipswich. Land was also purchased adjacent to Wrinch’s and a factory was built by joining war surplus Nissen huts together to form a linear building and a continuous furniture production line was created within it. This temporary structure survived until 1971 when a new building was erected over the old huts ensuring that not an hour of production was lost. The Alstons Furniture cabinet business has remained at this site to this day. During this time a new head office had been built and a programme of continuous investment in machinery maintained. Alstons Furniture has manufactured almost exclusively bedroom furniture during this period. In the 1950’s and 60’s this was centered on suites of bedroom furniture of veneered teak, walnut and mahogany finish (a suite comprised a ladies wardrobe, a gents wardrobe and a dressing table). The 1970’s saw the introduction of modular bedroom furniture ranges in veneered and painted finishes. In more recent years the Alstons have become a market leader in the production of traditional and contemporary bedroom ranges of laminate and painted finish.Leslie Alston remained in charge of the business until his death in 1976 at which point his oldest son Rex (John) took over as Managing Director with Leslie’s brother Percy (Roy) as Chairman. In 1979 Alan, Leslie’s other son became Chairman and Managing Director of Alstons Furniture, assisted by his bother Rex and with their cousin Noel (Percy’s son) as Sales Director. John P Alston joined the family business, Alstons Furniture, in 1974 becoming a Director in 1987 and Managing Director in 1995. In 2008 David Alston became Chairman of Alstons Furniture, taking on this role directly from his father. Also in this year John’s daughter Jessica Alston joined Alstons Furniture as a design assistant. The Upholstery business flourished and within 10 years, further satellite factories were opened in Hadleigh, Suffolk and Clacton, Essex. The recession of the early 1980’s saw a contraction of Alstons Furniture and the satellite factories were closed down and production and investment consolidated at the Colchester site. Up until 1995 Alan Alston continued to be responsible for the running of Alstons Furniture. In 1995 David Alston, Alan’s youngest son became Managing Director of the company and the responsibility passed on.In 2008 John Alston took on the role of chairman of Alstons Furniture from his father.During the life of the company it has manufactured sofas, sofa beds, sideboards, chairs and recliner chairs.Alstons Furniture continues to make all its production from its factory in Colchester and is now one of the leading producers of upholstery in the UK.

Could A Payday Loan Boost Your Chances For A Home Mortgage?

If you are looking to buy a home, an online payday loan might be very helpful. Of course a loan will not purchase a home; in fact the money aspect won’t do you much good at all. As we know, homes are very expensive and payday loans are usually only for a few hundred dollars. So what kind of help could a payday loan online provide? It is a great “go to” for emergency costs when you are trying to protect and build your credit before applying for a home mortgage. These payday lenders do not make a hard inquiry into your credit history, as other creditors do. You will not lose any points off your score just for applying. The loan itself will, once approved will not be reported to your credit either. The “no credit check” loans will not hurt your credit rating whatsoever unless you default on the loan.Building your credit can take years. Any little mishap or inquiry can change your score for the worse. Most bad remarks will remain on your credit report for 7 years. Even the inquiries from creditors will take two years to come off. Having little history or only a few items on it will be most affected by these inquiries. The biggest damage to your report will be within the first six months. If you are looking to buy a home in the next six months, do not apply for a credit card, but use a low cost payday loan online instead. There are lots of little costs which come into play when planning to purchase a new home, but applying for new cards or spending the available balance on ones you do have will only interfere with your application for your home mortgage. The payday loans themselves are easy to obtain and quick to process money into the bank. The hard part is for those who will not have the money to pay them back using their next paycheck. Any defaulted loan will be sold to a collections agency and the default debt will then be posted as a negative onto your credit. This default would not be a good thing for your home mortgage application. The purpose of staying away from using other creditors is to keep your credit clean for the six months. If you have other debt problems which may interfere with a home mortgage, you will want to address them. You are able to get one free credit report per year. When you look into your credit, it will not show up as a negative on your report, so take advantage of your free one. Every bit matters, comb through the report looking for any errors and the dates which they were reported. If you have some problems which are almost 7 years old, it may behoove you to wait until they do come off before applying for your mortgage. Using payday loans online during this time is appropriate when you have the funds to pay them back on time.Besides giving yourself a better chance at being approved for the home mortgage, the higher your score, the better you interest on that loan. You could be saving tens of thousands of dollars form interest over the years.

Scotland Employment Tribunals Guide

An Employment Tribunal is similar to a County Court but it deals exclusively with employment related matters. It will receive evidence from each of the parties and make its decision and can deal with the following types of cases:-
1. Unfair dismissal claims.
2. Redundancy claims.
3. Discrimination.
4. Disputes regarding the national or minimum wage.Wrongful Dismissal ClaimsIf you have a claim for wrongful dismissal you would normally not take this action to the Employment Tribunal. The reason for this is that the amount of compensation they can award is limited and quite often a claim for wrongful dismissal will exceed the limit available for compensation there. Therefore, it makes much more sense to take your claim for wrongful dismissal to the County Court.Time LimitsThere are certain time limits that must be adhered to, to ensure a claim can be heard. For example, a claim for unfair dismissal must be made within three months of the date of the dismissal, and in other cases the employee will have to have one year’s continuous employment before they can make a claim. Before the claim is issued you must raise your complaint with your employer and they must be allowed twenty eight days to respond. If you do not take this action your claim may be rejected until you do so.Payment of your salary whilst your claim continuesThere are certain types of serious claims which allow an employee to make an immediate application to the tribunal for you to continue to receive your salary. The following are the types of claims for which you can make this application:-
o Whistleblowing (where your employer is carrying out dangerous or illegal practices). Failure to allow you to carry out relevant health and safety related activities when it is your job to do so.
o Taking someone with you to a disciplinary or grievance procedure and being dismissed for doing so.
o Acting as a worker’s representative in a disciplinary or grievance procedure.
o Trade Union related dismissals.A claim for immediate payment of your salary must be made within seven days of the date of your dismissal. What is the process for an Employment Tribunal application?Once you have raised your application, ACAS will receive details of your claim and will contact you and your employer. They will attempt to resolve the dispute by negotiation. If you are unable to settle the claim, the claim will continue through various hearings until finally the Employment Tribunal hear your application.Final hearing Once all the evidence has been obtained, the Tribunal will consider the claim and make their decision. The Tribunal consists of three people, one legally qualified chairman and two other people from industry or the business sector. The Employment Tribunal can make one of the following decisions:-
o Reinstate you to your previous position of employment.
o Compensate you for your dismissal.
o Order that no compensation is payable to you.SummaryThe Employment Tribunal deals with all employment related matters and disputes and has similar powers to the County Court. However, dealing exclusively with employment matters makes it more focused and knowledgeable on these types of disputes. The only time you would not take an employment matter action there would be for wrongful dismissal where the compensation awarded in the Employment Tribunal would be capped.

Does Video Marketing Have to Cost You a Lot of Money?

Let’s get one thing clear. One of the main reasons why your competitors probably haven’t jumped into video marketing is because of their fear of cost. Please understand that the reason why they are not cranking out one marketing video after another probably is not due to their inability to appreciate the power of video marketing. In fact, most people in the marketing field would agree that video marketing brings a lot of value to the table. This is not the argument. This is not where people disagree. Instead, people have all sorts of misconceptions regarding the costs of video marketing. They can see the benefits with no problem. What they’re unclear on is whether the costs would justify the benefit.Use video marketing to reach out to your customers. Ask customers to email you with questions about what you offer, or questions about industry topics, and answer the questions you like best in a weekly video. If you need to generate some interest, give people a chance to win a free product if they send you a question. Most video marketing attempts fail the first timeWhat really clouds this whole picture is the fact that when you try anything the first time around and you don’t have some sort of blueprint of plan your chances of failure are quite high. This is not just a video marketing thing mind you. This applies across the board.Video marketing is a great way to give customers an idea of what your products look like before they order these items. You should create some videos in which you demonstrate your products. Show the different functions, test the products in extreme situations and do a lot of close ups.Maybe you’re trying to ride a bike. Maybe you’re trying to build a house or an addition. Maybe you’re trying to do a painting or you’re trying to sculpt. I am almost guaranteeing that your first few attempts are not going to be all that good. You probably already know this. Why should video marketing be any different? When people just jump in both feet because they got all excited about the benefits of video marketing, they might end up making rookie mistakes. How come. They did not have proper guidance and that’s the good news here. With the proper blueprint or coaching or video marketing consulting, you don’t have to commit those beginner mistakes. Your stuff doesn’t have to look amateurish and basic. You can come up with something truly professional the first time around. In fact, it’s not uncommon for small businesses to get out of the gate with high-quality videos that connect powerfully with their target audience members.Their secret, there is no secret at all. They just read the right resources and allow these resources to guide them in producing one hard-hitting quality video after another. If they can do it, you can do it too.To help garner even more views embed your video in your website. Most people when they think of video marketing think only of posting a video on YouTube. Instead, post it on your website and include a link on your Facebook wall and Tweet about your new video on Twitter. This really is not an issue of cost but more of information. With the right information, high-quality videos that truly go a long way in building up your brand doesn’t have to cost a lot. There are many ways to solve the video marketing problemFor people who are new to video marketing, try to keep your videos short. Around 30-45, seconds is a good length to start. You really do not have a lot of time to get your message through with the viewers’ short attention spans. As you become more experienced, you will notice that you are able to get your message across within this time frame easily. One of the main reasons why a lot of people have this idea that video marketing has to cost a lot of money is the misconception that they have to produce Hollywood or Madison Avenue level videos. Absolutely wrong. In fact, in certain niches, audiences respond favorably to very amateurish or very basic videos. You really just have to know your niche. More specifically, you just must know how to segment and break up your niche into little sub-markets. Put simply, the better you know your audience the more powerful your video can be and has nothing to do with how polished or smooth it is. Instead it has everything to do with your video’s ability to communicate with your target audience members on a very human, personal, and emotional level. There are many tools you can useOne of the best pieces of advice about video marketing is to keep it real. Make a script, rehearse it, and then shoot your video. That’s all there is to it. You will end up looking over produced and fake if you do more than that. Real is honest and reliable.Another piece of good news. You can drastically reduce your video productions costs by understanding that there are many different levels of videos. At the top of this hierarchy, of course, are high-quality videos. These are very personal, these are professionally shot, and these really are your meat and potatoes videos. These are the kind of videos that really champion your brand, but the levels beneath this kind of video are not as quality intensive. You can use the software to crank out a video for supplemental marketing. You can use software for video that is intended to supplement or support your text content. Obviously, the relationship with these different video levels goes a long way in reducing your overall cost. Keep the facts above in mind if you are still on the fence regarding video marketing. It doesn’t have to be expensive. It doesn’t have to cost a lot.If you plan to begin a video marketing campaign, put some time into designing a YouTube channel for your business. This will make your videos easy to find, and if a viewer enjoys the first video, they will have multiple others right at their fingertips. This organized, clustered way of presenting your videos will help to draw more viewers, and thus more customers.Do they have to cost you a lot of money? Let’s get one thing clear. One of the main reasons why your competitors probably haven’t jumped into video marketing is because of their fear of cost. Please understand that the reason why they are not cranking out one marketing video after another probably is not due to their inability to appreciate the power of video marketing.Make video marketing a part of your strategy, but do not rely on it entirely. Remember, it can be expensive to continuously post new videos. In addition, it can be time consuming to make them and put them up online. Therefore, while they are very valuable, you should engage in other tactics as well.

Do You Need Another Brand?

Multiple brands aren’t always the best approach. When launching new products or services, my client often ask me if they need a separate brand, especially if the offer is “breakthrough” or radically different from what they currently sell.Creating a separate identity may seem like a no-brainer, but it’s not necessarily the right choice.I’ve noticed a trend of sorts recently towards multiple brands, which isn’t always a good thing. From my observation, brand-breeding seems especially prevalent among solopreneurs who seem to feel that every endeavor needs its own brand platform. These independent professionals are trying to segment their brands and their lives, but often don’t succeed at either effort. The smaller the company, the harder it is to juggle multiple brands.Larger firms have similar issues, but it’s much easier to manage sub-brands or even disparate brands when you employ thousands of people and serve markets around the world. Different divisions often have their own brands, staff and identity for operational efficiency and marketing purposes.Regardless of whether you’re sitting behind a desk as a Fortune 500 company or a start-up, my advice on when to create a new brand can help you make the right choice.First, let’s look at the symptoms of split-brand personality disorder…
Multiple email addresses for the same contact, each on different domains.
Several websites, often stacked up in a pile of 3 or 4 URLs on business cards and letterhead
A blinding variety of logos which don’t seem to have any relation to each other
Customers are confused by the variety of product brands and/or company brands.
If you deal with any of these symptoms on a daily basis, or other issues like multiple signs on the door and not knowing what name to use when answering the phone, you may have a brand problem.Multi-Brand Hazards
Sometimes a new offering seems to demand its own brand, but it does carry risks. Stop and think hard before you head down that path. Downstream implications of multiple brands mean your business must deal with issues like:
What website do we send customers to? Is it worth splitting your website traffic between two or more sites, of is it better to have one site with several products or services listed?
What email addresses will our staff use? A consistent address build brand value, while variations dilute the brand.
How do we manage leads? Are responses uniform, or to you need brand-specific messages?
Will you have different sales teams for each brand? If yes, are the competing with each other for business?
Is there a unique P&L for each brand? If so, can you easily allocate revenue and expenses?
How will you manage social media profiles? One for each brand or an umbrella presence for the whole company?
These and many more queries will come up as you work to manage your multi-brand business. Sometimes it’s worth the trouble, and often, it’s not. When Should You Add A Brand?
There are some valid reasons for creating a new brand. It makes business sense to develop a stand-alone identity when certain criteria are met. These include:
A change in geography. If you’re entering a new country, a separate brand may make sense to address cultural differences. Often there’s a benefit to carrying forward an existing brand, but sometime language or imagery are not appropriate in the new market. A classic case in point is the Chevy Nova: “no va” mean “its doesn’t go” in Spanish, no such a good moniker for a car!
A dramatically different market. When your new offer targets a unique customer set, like small businesses rather than your usual enterprise market, branding can be used to differentiate the offers. This can help limit segment migration and fears one group of customer may have that you’re losing focus on their needs.
Differentiation (or discretion) is required. Sometimes a new offer appeals to a group of customers your existing buyers don’t really want to be associated with. Instead of selling both offers under one brand, you may chose to roll out the new offer with a distinct brand to avoid rocking the boat.
You have an exit strategy. Some products are developed with the intent of being sold once they gain traction. This is a lot easier to manage when the offering doesn’t carry the corporate name or that of the marquee product you plan to keep in your portfolio.
Vastly different products. If you’re launching a completely new and different category of product, you may find a separate brand is easier to sell to your existing customers than one that looks too much like what they’re used to. An example might be an organic yogurt firm branching into hosiery. The buyers might be the same, but they could have trouble making the connection between your product lines.
If you’ve got more questions about when or how to introduce a new brand, I’m happy to help. Feel free to leave a comment or give me a call at 678.823.8228.

Enlarged Heart – Learn About the Underlying Conditions and Common Diagnostic Procedures

An enlarged heart is a very common symptom of cardiac disease. It is not actually a disease condition but, as stated earlier, a symptom. The medical term for an enlarged heart is cardiomegaly. The causes for an enlarged heart are varied, and they will be discussed in the following paragraphs. An enlarged heart can be caused by an infection, high blood pressure, pulmonary hypertension, arrhythmias, conditions involving the heart valves, and even stress. Other causes that are not related to cardiac disease can be pregnancy, thyroid conditions, hemochromatosis, and amyloidosis. In the instances where a cardiac condition is involved, the heart will be taking on too much work, thus resulting in enlargement. Your heart is a very strong muscle that pumps an approximate 2,000 gallons of blood daily. Imagine the power that will require. Now, cardiac conditions might cause your heart to use more force than what is normally needed just so it can pump out the blood. These conditions will be causing the onset of cardiomegaly. You can almost liken it to a well-exercised bicep. The more weight you use during your workouts, the bigger it gets. So just like with the heart, the more force it uses, the bigger the heart becomes. However, when biceps become bigger, that is considered a good thing. With the heart, it is not. There are a lot of complications that can result from untreated cardiomegaly. Based on the symptoms alone, we cannot accurately conclude if the patient is really suffering from cardiomegaly or not. Its symptoms are nonspecific and can be caused by any other conditions. The best way to conclude if it is truly cardiomegaly would be to undergo a series of diagnostic procedures. The following are some of the most common procedures performed on a patient suspected of having cardiomegaly:• Chest X-rayIn this procedure, the outline of the heart is well-defined. Doctors have specific ways to measure the size of your heart depending on your age, gender, height, and weight. To get a rough estimate, you can compare it to the size if your fist.• ElectrocardiogramThis test records the electrical activity of your heart. Doctors will be able to pinpoint a specific problem just by basing it on your QRS complex or your ECG tracing.• EchocardiogramThis can be likened to an ultrasound of your heart and is considered to be one of the most accurate ways to diagnose cardiomegaly. In an echocardiogram, you doctor will be able to visualize your heart as a whole, its four chambers, its different valves, and its pumping action. It can even determine if you have ever suffered from a previous heart attack.Complications that can stem from an enlarged heart will be: heart failure, blood clots, cardiac arrest, and even death. Again, cardiomegaly is not a disease but a symptom. A diagnosis of having cardiomegaly will mean you will have to have the underlying condition treated to prevent the aforementioned complications. In the case of heart valve conditions, you may need to have heart valve surgery to correct it. In the case of high blood pressure, you will need to undergo pharmacological treatment to keep your blood pressure controlled.Conditions involving the heart are always serious. It is best to get regular checkups to spot the disease in its early stages and have the condition treated as soon as possible.

Gym Goers Biggest Fat Loss Mistake; Weight Loss is Harder When Your Workouts are Wrong

Daily, people from across the gym to lose weight. Their fat loss goals range from small (5-10 pounds) to enormous (100+ pounds). Weight loss isn’t as hard as people think, when done right. However, the people looking to lose weight make a huge mistake that could make fat loss next to impossible. When trying to lose weight and experience fat loss, the goal is to burn calories. People run on the treadmill for hours to lose fat and hop on the elliptical forever hoping to lose weight. While that may not be optimal, I will discuss why that won’t help you lose weight later.Today I want to talk about lifting weights for weight loss and fat loss.Yup, I said it. To lose weight and have fat loss, you need to lift weights. This may sound odd to some people, because it’s engrained in our minds that cardio equals fat loss. You’re supposed to lose weight on the treadmill and gain strength and size with weights. That’s mistake number one for fat loss, but it’s up there. So, to lose weight you must lift weight. Don’t go too heavy and stick to 12-15 reps. That’s optimum for weight loss. Now here’s the huge fat loss mistake: When trying to lose weight, people rest way to much. People are trying to lose weight, but they rest four minutes in between sets, get their heart rate down, and don’t burn as many calories. When exercising for weight loss, I recommend you do circuits of compound movements, like lunges, squats, curl to presses, push ups, etc. Also, it’s tough to lose weight just using machines. If you’re trying to lose weight, you need to burn calories, like I said. It’s harder to experience weight loss when you’re resting so much.I use this example when I talk to people about weight loss. If you’re trying to lose fat and you jump on a treadmill, you don’t go for three minutes, jump off, rest, then go back for more, do you? For weight loss, it’s impossible and doesn’t make sense. Then, if you are trying to lose weight, would you lift weights like that? It’s counter productive, especially for fat loss!If I could get one point across to people looking for weight loss, it would be to rest less while lifting weights (and it’s essential to lift weights if you want fat loss). People trying to lose weight waste so much time at the gym it’s insane. To lose weight, you don’t have to be at the gym for 90 minutes. The technique of shortening your rest for fat loss will speed up your workout, keep your heart rate up and get you to lose fat easier.Weight loss is simple. People make weight loss so much harder when they rest too much, If you want weight loss, hit the treadmill, eat right, and, most importantly, rest less!
